Bank Windhoek announces N$1.4 million in sports sponsorships

On Tuesday, 18 February 2025, Bank Windhoek announced sponsorships of N$460, 000 to the Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF), N$400,000 to the Namibia Aquatic Sports Federation (NASFED), and N$550,000 to the Namibia Chess Federation (NCF) for 2025. As a result, the overall sponsorship amount to the three sports codes is N$1,410,000.

The sponsorships will support the growth and development of volleyball, swimming and chess in Namibia while giving the youth a platform to improve and showcase their skills. Facilitated by these federations, sports events and initiatives will assist in having complete national teams to represent Namibia internationally.

NVF Vice President, Liina Mattheus said the sponsorship gives the Federation a grassroot to develop. "Without development, we would not have a national team representing Namibia."

NASFED President Riaan Steyn said the swimming sponsorship will enhance swimming gala events hosted throughout Namibia. “Swimming galas allow participants to compete locally, better their times, and qualify for various championships, including the national championships," he said.

Riaan said NASFED will also use part of the sponsorship funds for Corporate Social Responsibility through a 'Learn to Swim' programme. The programme will be facilitated by a roadshow introducing swimming training in various Namibian communities, which the Bank added was one factor that it looks forward to seeing because Namibians all must have access to the skill of swimming.

Another leg of the programme will involve tutoring coaches so that they can facilitate 'Learn to Swim' coaching schools.

Acting President of the NCF, Berdian Beukes said Bank Windhoek's support is an investment in chess, Namibian youth and education. "Chess is more than just a game. It is a life-changing tool that equips players with essential skills. It sharpens critical thinking, improves concentration, enhances problem-solving abilities and boosts academic performance."

He added that chess teaches discipline, patience, and emotional resilience, allowing players to handle success and setbacks.
